We started setting up for this:

In 2010, Eric Stroud, shark enthusiast, bought a church in the small town of Canajoharie, NY in order to take advantage of the immaculate organ that it houses. In the summer of 2011, he opened its doors for a weekend to let 13 bands stay, play and record. This is documentary of that weekend. Despite this being a “church” retreat, there was nothing really religious about it except for the fact that Eric’s a saint for letting us do this! Here’s a video of Gypsy Wig performing a new jam at Maxwell’s on October 15th without their new guitar player. Thanks to Robin Scheibnerfor the video. Check out the other videos he took from the show HERE.
Welcome Pete Egan on guitar (pictured below) who also doubles as Evan’s (bass) roommate. I got a chance to see them with dual guitars on Friday and boy did it rule. Pete seems like a fun dude too and really makes an already full sound more full, if that’s possible!
I know I haven’t updated in a while, but I assure you we here at Bedside Manner are still a thing. I just haven’t been on the net much since the power outtage and I don’t have smart phone. Anyway, we have some exciting stuff coming up:
The Painters will be releasing their third album on 11/11/11 with a revamped lineup. Where’s the first album you wonder? Well, we’re working on getting that up too, it is definitely something you should hear.
Melissa & Paul have finished recording their next release and are planning a 10″ release via Bedside Manner and another tba label(s). There will also be a digital and tape component. The tape will include tracks you can only get on the tape! I guess those aren’t really called tracks though. Either way, the vinyl and tape will both be limited releases, but a full digital release is also in the works. This all should be ready early next year, hopefully before record store day! M & P are also playing this Sunday for a Don Giovanni showcase at Maxwell’s with Black Wine, Laura Stevenson and the Cans, The Potatomen and more! Both Gypsy Wig and Melissa & Paul are slated to do a four day weekend tour in early January. More updates on that soon!
One more thing: WE DIDN’T FORGET ABOUT THE CHURCH RETREAT! That is still very much in the works. We’ve been recieving finished audio and preparing it to send to Eric so he can get on the video editing!
First up is Gypsy Wig, The Brian St. John Quartet, and Looters in a Riot NEXT WEDNESDAY at 8pm. In November, Melissa & Paul return to Maxwell’s via Don Giovanni Records with The Potatomen, Laura Stevenson and The Cans, Waxahatchee, and Sparkle Shit.
In other news, the NOTROCK RECORDS comp release is tomorrow featuring Insouciant, Rabbit Troupe, Young American Artists, The Human Era and many more! All of the bands are playing 4 song/20 minute sets. Stoked on that! I’ve been following the production of this comp since I heard about it and I must say we can all learn a thing or two about DIY from NRR…truly inspiring/hardworking dude(s). The comp will look awesome….you’ll see! In the meantime, listen to it HERE!
Also, Melissa & Paul will be spending the weekend recording for their next release. They’ll be teaming up again with Kevin Carafa, but this time they’re recording at the Bedside Manner for a more comfortable atmosphere. More on that soon! Listen to their first release and live EP HERE.
That’s right folks. You’re looking at the first pressing of Gypsy Wig‘s debut EP. There’s 100 of these puppies and you can get one at the Stan(o)hope House on Friday, July 22nd. Dewey and the Decimal System and Spook Houses will be joining them. Don’t miss it! Head on over the releases section to hear the entire album.
Why are you looking at a google map street view of a church? Well, at about 7pm tonight, a bunch of us are headed to Canajoharie, New York to spend the weekend in that very church pictured to the left.
Here’s why: My neighbor plays organ and shopped around for a church with an organ suitable for his needs. He found that at the Cliff Street Church in Canajohairie, NY (About 3-4 hours North), so he bought it. I recently talked to him about having a bunch of bands up there to stay for a couple of days as we document everything via audio and film. The goal is to leave with enough material to compile some sort of video comp/documentary with live performances, interviews, and anything else we may capture. Eric (the owner) liked the idea and agreed to open his church to us for the weekend of July 1-July 3 so we can film our little documentary. It should be noted that this is not a party and not a show. The whole thing will be very focused and everyone up there will have some sort of role. Wish us luck! Click READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY for a list of confirmed bands, labels, and zines.
