We started setting up for this:

In 2010, Eric Stroud, shark enthusiast, bought a church in the small town of Canajoharie, NY in order to take advantage of the immaculate organ that it houses. In the summer of 2011, he opened its doors for a weekend to let 13 bands stay, play and record. This is documentary of that weekend. Despite this being a “church” retreat, there was nothing really religious about it except for the fact that Eric’s a saint for letting us do this! The Painters (Ian Keller & Genevieve Chasty) hint at a new release on March 8th, 2013 by simply posting ” AF: #003 3/8/13″ on their facebook page. The ‘A’ stands for “Artist” and the ‘F’ stands for “Friendly” making Artist Friendly Records. The ‘003’ means it is the third release by both the band and label and then there’s the date…at least that’s how I interpret it! We can only hope. In the meantime, you can hear the sophomore album by The Painters here:
and their live set from the Canajoharie Church Retreat here:
Possible cover art or part of it?
On July 4th weekend 2011, 13 bands traveled from North Jersey, Brooklyn and other parts of NJ to the small (ghost) town of Canajoharie, NY. The weekend was filled with live music, jams, food and fun to say the least. Today, we started uploading the audio from the weekend. Video also exists, but be patient. You can check out sets from: The Painters, Keith Kenny, and Les Trois Chaud below! We’ll be uploading the rest little by little in the next week or so! Keep checking back and ENJOY! Our biggest thanks and gratitude goes to Eric Stroud of Shark Defense for opening up the church to us for the weekend. Also, since everyone there was super respectful and it went smoothly, Eric said we can go up again!
I know I haven’t updated in a while, but I assure you we here at Bedside Manner are still a thing. I just haven’t been on the net much since the power outtage and I don’t have smart phone. Anyway, we have some exciting stuff coming up:
The Painters will be releasing their third album on 11/11/11 with a revamped lineup. Where’s the first album you wonder? Well, we’re working on getting that up too, it is definitely something you should hear.
Melissa & Paul have finished recording their next release and are planning a 10″ release via Bedside Manner and another tba label(s). There will also be a digital and tape component. The tape will include tracks you can only get on the tape! I guess those aren’t really called tracks though. Either way, the vinyl and tape will both be limited releases, but a full digital release is also in the works. This all should be ready early next year, hopefully before record store day! M & P are also playing this Sunday for a Don Giovanni showcase at Maxwell’s with Black Wine, Laura Stevenson and the Cans, The Potatomen and more! Both Gypsy Wig and Melissa & Paul are slated to do a four day weekend tour in early January. More updates on that soon!
One more thing: WE DIDN’T FORGET ABOUT THE CHURCH RETREAT! That is still very much in the works. We’ve been recieving finished audio and preparing it to send to Eric so he can get on the video editing!

Why are you looking at a google map street view of a church? Well, at about 7pm tonight, a bunch of us are headed to Canajoharie, New York to spend the weekend in that very church pictured to the left.
Here’s why: My neighbor plays organ and shopped around for a church with an organ suitable for his needs. He found that at the Cliff Street Church in Canajohairie, NY (About 3-4 hours North), so he bought it. I recently talked to him about having a bunch of bands up there to stay for a couple of days as we document everything via audio and film. The goal is to leave with enough material to compile some sort of video comp/documentary with live performances, interviews, and anything else we may capture. Eric (the owner) liked the idea and agreed to open his church to us for the weekend of July 1-July 3 so we can film our little documentary. It should be noted that this is not a party and not a show. The whole thing will be very focused and everyone up there will have some sort of role. Wish us luck! Click READ THE REST OF THIS ENTRY for a list of confirmed bands, labels, and zines.
It’s true. Young American Artists is still truckin’! They will release 3 new songs digitally, at some point today. Keep checkin’ back! Come see them in the Psychedelic lounge with Barcode Youth (if Propagandhi were street punk), Senium (for fans of Nirvana/Steve Albini), and The Painters (you know them, you love them!) tonight at the Stanhope House. First ever run of YAA shirts will also be available and this will more than likely be their last show until Sept/Oct.
Speaking of The Painters, Ian officially ended his quest for a female non-drummer with personality type yadda yadda. Enter Kait Barone on the sticks. They jammed at my house the other day and it rules! I can’t wait to finally hear some of these songs live. Also, in the other room tonight, Eyeswan is releasing a new record!
Now availble! We’re happy to announce that The Painters have joined the Bedside Manner family via digital download. Some of you may recongize the voice as the former personality of the still-truckin’ Young American Artists. That’s right folks, not only is Ian Keller an ex-member of NJ’s Titus Andronicus, he shredded some vocal chords with Bedside’s Young American Artists for their first two sessions. If you lost interest after his departure, this is certainly for you! If that’s not enough, the ever-so-important, Pitchfork Media is also raving about The Painters and we have pictures…well, a picture to prove it! They gave Less is More an 8.7/10 saying “It’s so bad that it is good, but then it’s bad again and then it’s good and then once again it turns bad.”
Now, I’ve yet to determine whether Ian is a genius or insane, or maybe a bit of both, but I cannot deny my enthusiasm for his minimal approach to songwriting topped with an airy, smooth, and refreshing voice. I would be lying if I said he didn’t sing me to sleep a few times, literally. I encourage you to check out this release and start your own journey on solving the puzzle that is Ian Keller and The Painters. Embrace those traffic stopping colors! Fans of the White Stripes, The Gories and The Mummies may dig this! Listen to the entire release above and download it for free HERE.
Former Young American Artists vocalist, Ian Keller makes up The Painters– a minimal solo project that rocks like The Gories and maybe even a little White Stripes. Perhaps he will pick up where Jack and Meg left off with their recent break up…Either way, Ian’s “less is more” approach proves effective and memorable with this 11 track highly blues influenced full length. With only a floor tom, snare and cymbal to back up his down-tuned ebay guitar, his low-register voice meshes perfectly with the clean drone-like guitar parts. The lo-fi/no bullshit recording allow the listener to focus on what’s important…the songs. Notable tracks include the opener, “Track 1,” and “Track 4.” Be sure to check out his set at Eyeconik Records on February 27th! Click readmore for the free download of all 11 songs!
